Apparition
The ghost behind the masks
So in looking at the masks that I wear, we sometimes wonder who is the real me?
The father? The Magician? the Fool? The Hermit? The nurse? The Monster? the Good Neighbor? The Helpful Friend? The Lover? The Devil? and so many more.
Masks are the personas we build for the environments that we function in. It’s both a survival mechanism and simple psychology. Everyone does it to some degree. We all wear masks. One for work. One for out and about. One for church perhaps. Especially those Sunday morning Christians. They have especially pious masks.
But they also have the masks for when they do naughty things. Lustful things. We all have our base natures. We all have our cravings. Needs. The lover. The Devil.
But what is the source behind the masks. Is there a mask that is the genuine article? Who is the primary personality? Or is it masks all the way down? Do we exists as a fracture of personalities that we throw together for each environment? Or is there a guiding force behind it that directs the masks? A ghost behind the masks that is the real personality behind the personas?
I can’t tell. When I am in the mask, I am the mask. I am the personality of the mask. When I change, I change completely. Shifting gears, you might say. Work is work. Home is home. I was a prison guard once. I learned not to take that home with you. So you shift ge
is work.
So is it the me that is the Me that is at home the truly me? As that is the mask I revert to most often when at rest. Is it the Magician? Who gives me the will to learn and evolve the mystic arts? The Hermit? Who wishes to be left alone and contemplate the mysteries of existance?
Is it the Devil? Who pulls the strings and wishs to manipulate? Who gives me all kinds of wonderous machinations and plans?
The Lover? Who wishes to indulge in the pleasures of the flesh?
So many masks.
What is under them?
What is real? What is the mask?

Perhaps the strangest moment comes when we stop looking for the right mask and notice that all of them pass, while something remains present through every change. Not always visible, but impossible to replace.
